corning community college State University of New York THE CRIER April 6th “The Voice of the CCC Student Body” Spring 2005 ________Let us know what you think: www.cee_cee_response@yahoo.com From the Editor: The, Life of the ■Student Senate Each student senator has his/ her own reasons why he/ she has chosen to become a senator. As senator, we take part in many activities on and off campus. Some have chosen to start their college life with the senate and others have started with clubs or sports and then worked their way to the senate. The Student Senate currently has 12 senators, four of which hold an officer position on the senate. Yuri Charlanow: I am from Lowman, NY. I was in the United States Marine Corps for five years, separated as a Sergeant in 2001. After my tour in the Marine Corps, I was hired by a local Motorola dealership to repair radios. After a few years, I decided that I needed to continue my education and choose a new career path. I am currently a Criminal justice major. I will graduate in May and begin the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy soon thereafter. I have been the Speaker of the Senate since elected in May of 2004. I also serve as the Student Representative on the Joint Council of the College Association. This semester I was awarded the Student Leadership Scholarship. I also have been a part of the Criminal Justice Society and WCEB, with the exception of this semester due to lack of time. Fabrina Goodeli: I have been a senator for three semesters. I am currently the Deputy Speaker of the senate. I believe that student senators have a very important job. They are the voice of the students here at CCC. So I would like to say to any student here at corning, if you have an issue, see die Student senators; because your problems are also ours. Anthony Kowtun: I reside in Hornell, NY. I am majoring in a dual degree in accounting and business administration. I am hoping to pursue a career in accounting after I am done widi my studies. I am currently the treasurer of the Student Senate. I think that as a Senator, I have helped in expressing many issues of the student body concerns. I am also in the business club and the Accounting Society. I feel that getting involved in extracurricular activities, like student government, helps you get more adjusted to the school. I also feel that it helps you become more focused on your studies. I encourage everyone to get involve in some sort of extracurricular activity. Crystal Murphy: I am die secretary of the senate, and this is my last semester here. My major is Public Relations/ Media communications. I have been with the senate sine the fall of 2001. I have worked on the Bus issues, smoking issues, and other college problems. I hold a spot on the college’s marketing committee. Carla Kowtun: I am a full time student with two young children. I am currently a Senator since the fall 2004 semester and I am currently running for Executive board secretary as a write in vote. I am also Vice President of the Business club and belong to several college committees. I am working on my Associates Degree in Human Services and thinking about a possible dual degree in Liberal Arts: General Studies. I plan to attend Alfred University in the near future. I think getting involved in die college campus is very important and has improved my views in many ways. I also think that it makes a person get a better idea of what is actually happening on the campus. It has given myself personal and academic growth as well and made me realize things about myself that I was unaware of. My suggestion to everyone is that if you want to make a difference or experience new things, get involved as much as possible. Yvonne Thomas: I am a Business Administration major and I am currently a student senator and president of the business club. I have also been die treasurer of the business club. I choose to become a senator because I feel that it is important for the students to get involved with other activities that just their classes. I feel that being part of the student senate has made me a better student. I joined the student senate because I felt that it would give me a better understanding of the college and what is going on within die school as well. Since I have joined the student senate I have also taken part in committees on campus and I have also taken part in RAB within the complex that I live in Hornell. I think that every student should take part in some sort of campus activity. Jennifer Lieb: I am Liberal Arts major. This is my second semester at CCC. I am secretary of the CCC Business club. I work at the Hornell YMCA as a desk receptionist. I have also coached youth basketball for the last five years through the YMCA. I have coached Jr. Girls for five years and this past season coached a high school girl’s league team. Lloyd Miller: I became a Senator to add some older experience and voice to the campus. Presently I am engaged in a dual degree. I am an Army veteran of the 60’s and served for 3 years. I look forward to aiding CCC students in all times of question. Alicia Rathbun: I am a 25-year-old native of Elmira, NY. I am a Student Senator, the Secretary for Activities Programming Committee (APC), and the Vice President of the CCC Psychology Club. I am also a Student Association Representative on the Instructional Resources Committee, which is a faculty committee. I am currently a Liberal Arts-General Studies major. When I leave Corning Community College, I plan to pursue a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree, as weE as a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology. When I finish college, I plan to teach Psychology at the College/University level. I want to make Psychology fun and interesting for students so that they will want to learn it. I want young adults to have a better understanding of their thinking, behavior, perception, and interaction with the world around them. I want to influence young adults and assist them in making good life choices. You might ask, “Why is she a Senator?” Student Association is for exactly whom it states it is for: the students. I became a Senator because I decided that it was time for me to get involved with activities at Corning Community College. Being a Senator has turned out to be much more. It’s not only about getting involved. It’s about community service and having a voice. As a Senator, you get to listen to and address issues involving students. You get to be a part of the decision-making process with issues that directly affect the students. You learn more about the College and how it is operated. Mike Warr: The program that I am in is nursing. I plan to become an RN and open an adult care facility in the future. My hobbies are football and walking, Asa senator, you are always welcome to come to me with your CCC problems or accomphshments. Theresa Price - Whittle: I am a Human Service major with a concentration of chemical dependency. I am Interested in international studies in Africa with a minor in Criminal Justice. I wanted to become a senator to be an advocate to speak for you the students who could not speak directly for themselves. Jamie French: I am 27, a mother of 2 boys and 1 girl. My major is Chemical Dependency Counseling. This is my first semester at CCC. I wanted to become a senator because I wanted to represent my school. In addition, I want to be the voice of the students who cannot. t&ClXPe or Depraved? (The Crier Review Region) Breakfast of Champions (Review) By Kim Henderson Spring is upon us...time to make those summer reading lists with all of those must-read bestsellers on them, or not! Don’t follow the crowd and read only what Oprah thinks is hot this week, instead, try reading something thoughtful and groovy this summer...read some classic seventies-something Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Although Iike a lot of Vonnegut’s books (I got hooked on him in high school when we were forced to read Slaughterhouse-Five.! I think my favorite to date would be Breakfast of Champions. I bought it on a whim a couple of weeks ago on Amazon.com and started out reading it to my boyfriend at night, but that didn’t last long because I couldn’t help but read ahead, it was that good! As with all of Vonnegut’s books, Breakfast of Champions started out very whimsical and ended very gritty..with most of the main characters in the hospital due to the insane fantasies of a raging lunatic and Kilgore Trout (my favorite Vonnegut character who appears in most of his books) meeting his maker, the author of the book, Vonnegut himself! Although this book may sound very funny so far, a word of caution to the would-be reader, this book is also VERY serious! Vonnegut likes to have fun with words (and pictures!) and this book is no exception, but it is also about many important social and political problems of the time. Vonnegut leaves very little ground uncovered as he explores drugs, violence, the same-ness and boringness of our Eves, lack of human contact, lack of love, lack of sex, lack of jobs (especiaUy for African Americans, at that time,) pornography, prescription drugs and bad chemicals. Does any of this sound familiar? So read die book, already! I’d give you my copy, but I’m afraid my boyfriend is still under the impression I’m going to read it to him. Reaching Out Teen to Teen My name is Jason Murdock and I am currently a Psychology major at Corning Community College. My goal in life is to help others. I want to turn my problems and help those in need. I have been incarcerated for drugs and assault. I have also been through suicide attempts for my sexual orientation and all the loss I have suffered through. I have been into the drugs and alcohol. Basically, anything you name, I’ve done it. I have set up a mailing support service for those who may need to talk anonymously. If you are struggling or just need someone to listen to you, I have been there. There are many counselors out there who haven’t lived what we have lived through. I am here for you. This is for anyone, not just teenagers. askmurdock@.yahoo.com Jason Murdock 1074 Charles St. Elmira, NY 14904 607-735-0822 In memory of Pope John Paul II (1920-2005) Bowling Ball Abandoned “11 Things I hate about Easter...” 1) Some Random Middle-Aged Hippie What’s up with that funky green grass in my Easter basket man? Next issue: “11 Things I hate about Road Construction! (Get to Work!) Send in your pet peeves to cee cee response@yahoo.com! on CCC Campus Neith Little On March 24ri’ a very battered maroon bowling ball, engraved with the name “Mike,” was discovered on the grounds of Corning Community College’s main campus. Someone, presumably someone named Mike, apparently used a Sawzall, or some similar cutting tool, on the poor, defenseless bowling ball, before leaving it to its fate in the snow. Fortunately, three good Samaritans, including one CCC security officer, took pity on the bowling ball and rolled it to a trash can. Yet the question remains, who is Mike, and why did he (or perhaps someone who didn’t like him very much) attempt to slice-and-dice the bowling ball, then abandon it? Is it possible that we have a bowling ball batterer on the loose? For the present, it might be wise to prevent your bowling balls from wandering on their own, and you might want to keep a close eye on your funny looking shoes, too, just to be safe. $49.99 phones are available while supplies last and may not be available at all locations.
